Why CRON?
CRON provides services that the Institute does not. In particular we've scanners, plotters, specialized software, servers, and a tech support team a tad closer than Bangalore.
Why do I have to pay a 'CRON Computing Fee' when I'm already paying so much for tuition?
Departmental computing is not included in your tuition. The Department provides you with specialized software, peripherals and printing at tremendous savings to you.
Can you help me if I lose my data on a CRON computer?
Probably not (our best efforts notwithstanding). You should keep a backup copy of important documents! We've an entire section of this site devoted to backups (see BACKUPS tab).
Can you help me if I lose my data on my personal computer?
Probably not (our best efforts notwithstanding). You should keep a backup copy of important documents! We've an entire section of this site devoted to backups (see BACKUPS tab).
It's frustrating when the computer crashes and I lose hours of work that I haven't saved!
Yes it is, so save your work often!
May I listen to music?
Yes, but please use your own headphones for the comfort of your fellow students.
What if someone forgets his ID card for access to the clusters?
For obvious safety and security reasons, DON'T let him in unless you know POSITIVELY that he is an ARCH/DUSP student.
Is smoking permitted in any MIT buildings?
Nope.
Is there a Lost & Found?
The CRON Coordinator (9-516) keeps a 'lost and found.'
Is it safe for me to leave my files on public computers?
NO. NEVER! Save your files to your networked home directory and/or I: drive. And keep backups!
May I Install my own software on public computers?
Most likely not. Check with a member of the CRON staff.
May I take home copies of software?
No software may be copied from any computers at MIT. That said, MIT and CRON have some software licenses available for student computers. The licensing terms for this software are very strict. Students must agree to the terms before installation. Visit the LAPTOPS tab for more information.
What goes on during the summer?
The Summer is a time of "what you get is how it works" unguaranteed service. This is because we're extraordinarily busy preparing for Fall. Thus there is no consulting help, and you're on your own.
