Recent Changes

Overview

Both MacAthena and WinAthena environments have been upgraded over the summer. New plotters populate 7-408 and 10-485. Plotting is now charged on a per use basis. A new CRON Computing Fee structure has been put in place for F09.

CRON Computing Fee

Beginning F09, students are charged a flat fee for printing, photocopying and distributed software in the amount of $75/term. This 'CRON Computing Fee' appears on the first Bursar's statement of each term. The fee does not include plotting, which is charged on a per plot basis. (Details below.)

New Print Policy

In an effort to curb monetary and environmental costs, we've a no-nonsense print policy. It has been posted in all printing areas and can be viewed here. To further tame the beast which goes by 'Printing' and 'Wanton Waste', we' ask you please make use of the queue management tools described below.

Queue Management Tools:

  1. eyeQ stations: these are old, one-trick-pony Macintoshes placed in the pastures of 7-408, 9-547 and 10-485. Login with your Kerberos ID and password, select the queue which interests you and delete any/all of those jobs belonging to you. (Note that you may need to wait 30 seconds after waking the computer before logging in.)
  2. eyeQ for the web: view print queues and remove jobs from the convenience of a web browser (MIT certificates required).
Note: eyeQ for the web users can remove others' jobs. Out of respect for your colleagues, this feature should not be used except in extraordinary circumstances. Removing another's job generates an email message informing job owner that you have removed his job. URL: http://cron.mit.edu/eyeq
  3. eyePlot: this is a new tool which manages plotter queues. One releases held jobs, moves held jobs from queue to queue, removes released jobs, views monthly and yearly plotting records and more! eyePlot can be found here: http://cron.mit.edu/eyePlot (certificates required). Full instructions are posted here: http://cron.mit.edu/printing

Plotters: Two new top-of-the-line HP DesignJet Z6100PS 42" plotters have replaced the DesignJet 5000PS plotters in 7-408. The DesginJet 1055cm in 10-485 has been replaced with a DesignJet 5000PS.

The Z6100s have far greater color fidelity than any previous plotter. They sport 8 inks and are approximately 30% faster than the 5000ps' they replace.

Users are now charged $3.50 for every plot, regardless of dimensions.

Plot charges appear on monthly Bursar's statement under 'CRON Plotting Fee'. More details on policy and the like can be found here: http://cron.mit.edu/p.lasso?t=4:0:0

Photocopier: Photocopy costs are factored into the student computing fee. The photocopier can be found in 7-408.

Software

All cluster software has been upgraded to the latest versions. Please visit the following section for software made available to student personal laptops: http://cron.mit.edu/p.lasso?t=8:5:0

Green Computing

CRON have consolidated and 'virtualized' a good number of the servers it has running in the sub-basement of building 9. As a result, the total number of server boxes has been reduced 75% over the past 2 years. Fewer boxes, smaller carbon footprint.

By populating clusters with dual-boot computers, we've also reduced our energy footprint. CRON also favors products with Energy Star v5 ratings.

Documentation

All new and improved! Posters, web site, labels, etc.! Replete with novel (mis)spellings, bizarre typos and Galapagos marine iguanas.

Rapid Prototyping

All RPL equipment is managed out of the WorkShop group led by Chris Dewart. Email rpl@mit.edu or visit the RPL web site for more information.
